Some TB test numbers

Every fall, we offer free TB testing at two elementary schools in the district. Why? Because volunteers are the lifeblood of good schools in Sunnyvale, and you need a valid TB test in order to volunteer. This is a barrier for many people, who have problems making it to a doctor’s office. We are proud to be able to offer this,

This fall was no different. We provided TB testing services at two schools, San Miguel and Bishop Elementary Schools. We provided 65 tests across both schools, with the majority of people being tested having students at those schools. The tests are offered to people with children at any school in the district however, and parents from nine of the ten schools did sign up, so we should have an impact on volunteering throughout the district.

We’re exploring broadening the program to more schools in future years because it’s so successful. Look out for the announcement late next summer for the 2018 tests!

Need a TB test to volunteer? We can help!

It’s the beginning of the school year, so it’s time to get a TB test! Volunteers in Sunnyvale Schools are required to get a new TB test every four years. We’re offering testing at Bishop and San Miguel Elementary Schools this year. While the tests are at these schools, parents/guardians/potential volunteers from any Sunnyvale School can get one.

You can sign up ahead of time at either Bishop Elementary School for Monday September 25th or San Miguel Elementary School on September 28th. We may be able to fit you in if you simply show up, but registering ahead of time will guarantee you a spot. You can download the English version or Spanish Version of the flyer in PDF form as well, if you need it.c

Thanks for registering and we’ll see you in late September!

A successful science camp fundraiser!

We held an online fundraiser last May to raise money for Science Camp – a number of schools across the district had not raised enough money to pay for science camp that their fifth graders had already attended! We matched all funds up to $5000 raised, and were able to write the district a check for $8400 last June to cover much of the cost. We’re happy to have helped students have this formative experience, even in a small way.

If you would like to donate to cover costs for field trips, science camp, art books, or other things this year, consider heading over to our donation page and making a small donation. Any amount is appreciated and makes a difference!

Don’t forget about address verification and orientation!

School is almost back in session! Here are some important upcoming dates:
  • Address verification is happening at several campuses this week. Please check your school’s web site for details.
  • Columbia Middle School and Sunnyvale Middle School are hosting 6th grade orientation this year! It’s Friday, August 11th from 8am-12pm
    • SMS is also hosting a 6th grade parent orientation on August 11th, at 8-9 am OR 5-6pm. Both parent sessions will cover the same material – only attend one please.
  • First day of school is Wednesday, August 16!

We hope you’re enjoying the last few days of summer!

Thanks Synopsys!

Huge thanks to Synopsis! They donated $2500 to our Science Camp fundraiser last spring, earmarked specifically for 5th grade students from San Miguel. Covering science camp funds is always difficult for the title 1 schools, and San Miguel was especially short last year. This was part of our overall science camp fundraiser last spring, and it wouldn’t have been as successful without them.
